Mazeppa is an Israeli Haifa based psychedelic band formed in 2017. Michal Pérez Noy started the band after having a vision inspired by reading Rainer Maria Rilke Poem - "Storm" which was describing very well her own feelings at the time. The song tells the story of the Ukraine hero Mazeppa tied to a riding wild horse horizontally to the ground without any control over it. When digging into the myth she understood that she must compose this poem, and soon, more of Rilke's poems composed. At that point, Guitarist Asaf Koren, Bassist Elad Bardes and drummer Amir Noy joined the lineup, and naturally the band named itself Mazeppa. Later, the band started writing its own lyrics and in its debut album there is a mix of Rilke's lyrics and the band lyrics all composed by Michal and arranged by the band.
The band sound can be described as a combination of musical languages that moves in the worlds of psychedelia, art rock, shoegaze and dark pop. Among others, Mazeppa’s music is influenced by music from films, various bands such as The Velvet Underground, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nico, Portis Head, Patty Smith, Various Turkish Music, Krautrock, Experimental Music and more…
In 2019, the band started to work with producer Benjamin Esterlis, and together they got into an analog studio in Italy and recorded the album songs in live sessions which was later overdubbed in the studio with keyboards and synth sounds.
The band live shows known for its free jamming elements that connect the songs to long pieces of music as the band members often say – "what can we do, we love long songs…"
So far, the band released 3 singles, "Storm", "The Way In" and "Roses" followed by its self-titled debut album "MAZEPPA" which was released on Feb 10th 2021 and is available on all streaming platforms, and soon will be available as a vinyl record.
